The Chess and Math Teacher Training Course is a course on how to teach math problem solving skills through games and puzzles. The course gives teachers the confidence and perspective to teach math in a fun and exciting way for children ages 8-12. The course includes interactive presentations, group work and practical exercises. The emphasis of the course is on innovative ways of teaching problem solving methods.
  • Who should attend?
  • Anyone who is involved or interested in teaching math or math to children and is looking for an innovative and engaging approach. Those who have attended include teachers, chess tutors and coordinators of extracurricular activities.
  • Feedback
  • The course has been run several times in London with rave reviews. This is the second edition that the course is carried out in On Line format. People from Spain, Chile, Peru, Ecuador, etc. have participated in the first edition.
  • Pedagogy
  • The basis of the teaching method is that problem solving is more natural and accessible in a gaming environment. Children love to play and are motivated to find a winning strategy. The course features a series of exercises that have been tested in the classroom and refined accordingly. The course explains how to solve problems using a variety of approaches.
  • Methodology
  • The problem-solving approach is based on the work of George Pólya, who informs the teaching of mathematics around the world, including the Singapore Method. The course is derived from the ErasmusPlus CHAMPS Project - Chess and Mathematics in Primary Schools, which has set the European benchmark. The course presenters were the main authors on the material and how to present it.

  • Rita Atkins is a math and physics teacher and is a certified chess player.
  • Pep Suárez is an experienced chess teacher who worked with mathematical models.
Pep and Rita developed the training course because they saw the great potential of teaching math through games and puzzles.

  • Title
  • The course is certified by the European Chess Union and can count towards the professional development of teachers. The certificate requires passing a test at the end of the course. Attendees must bring a digital device on which to run the test.

  • The cost of the course is 100 euros and includes the digital download of the book 64 Chess and Mathematics Exercises for Schools.
